How does Google maps work?

Google buys sattelite data from whatever satellite imaging company it can so that it will show at most data 3 years old. Most of the images are one year old, but there are enough that are several weeks old in areas like US or Western Europe.

Google hopes to offer a 10 centimeter resolution in the future whereas right now the images have a 1 metre resolution. Go Google.
