BBC News: how the Panama canal was built

First the French wanted to build the Panama canal, but after 20 000 deaths, they simply weren’t ready to continue. Then they sold the canal to the US which sustained other 5000 deaths. The US created a new system for the canal in which you could raise a ship way above the sea level using a series of doors and areas where you would flood them with water to raise the boats.

After a while US sold the canal to Panama. It helps ships shorten the distance even with 45% and is one of the amazing engineering wonders of XIX- XX centuries.
