The guys at Computerphile showcased a real life Holodeck using an Oculus Rift. Joe from Max-Planck-Institut für biologische Kybernetik explains how this holodeck works and what tricks to they use to make people feel that they are in a bigger environment than that actual room.
They use 16 cameras to track the head position and the position of the visitor and, when the visitor reaches the edge of the room, the software skews a bit the landscape to make him walk past the walls and not into them.
Using VR – virtual reality – systems to make this holodeck happen in a good trick by and in itself. Have fun guys, but i’ll want to see the real holodeck from Star Trek 😀
