Femto-magic: a stop motion video with atoms named “A boy and his atom”

IBM has created the world’s smallest movie whereby they used atoms and moved them around to create a stop motion video. This historical event marks an era in which IBM wants to be the leader: atomic scale memory.

In 2012 they were able to use atomic bits where 12 atoms would be a bit and the goal is to use one atom/ bit. This would lead to a great increase in the capacity the memory disks or plates of the future will have. In the stop motion video you can see how IBM used a scanning tunneling microscope to move thousands of atoms into position. The video is a 100 million magnification of the actual atoms.
