Travel between 400 000 galaxies in a 3D map of our Universe [video]

Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 is the basis of this 3D map of the Universe. It is not all the Universe, but only a small fraction of it, and it goes to about 1.7 Billion light-years in distance.

You can see in the video above an animation that uses actual images of those galaxies. Each bright dot in there is a galaxy. Absolutely amazing. Will we ever be able to get that far? No idea, but it is astounding that we have in deed a 3D map of our surroundings.
