Water physics – welcome to wonderland

Seeing waves and rain in slow motion is always a neat thing. More interesting is when you want to release a droplet of water in a pool. At high speeds a droplet simply pushed and enters into the mass of water, but releasing it at low speeds you can see how it will grow smaller and smaller.

At a certain stage the droplet will simply bounce like a ping-pong ball. Delightful. Key player in all this is the surface tension of the mass of water and the one of the water droplet.

Ever tried to release an egg from some height into a pool where a newspaper is on the surface of the water? The egg will break and not get into the water straight away. This is science trolling eggs. Via [Geeksaresexy].
