What are sounds and when were they recorded the first time [video]

It’s not a secret that sounds are mechanical waves that are propagated through matter. So, if there’s no matter, there’s no sound. Incredibly enough the first time humanity recorded sound was in 1859, when Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville created and used the phonautograph.

And yes, solid objects do vibrate ie “make waves” when touched or hit. Much like water makes waves, but at another, smaller scale and with way bigger speeds. Vsauce explains how sound works, how we can hear it and speaks a bit about the long history of sound recording. Fascinating to know that the world is more than meets the eye. Or the ear, for that matter 😀
