What is life? Can we recognize alien life? [TED video]

Well, VSauce spoke about life a while ago and got some things straighten up. But how do you search for alien life forms? Can you even imagine what to look at or, better yet, if you look at an alien life form would know know that it’s what it is?

Christoph Adami, Professor of Applied Life Sciences at the Keck Graduate Institute in Claremont, CA, has invented the “Avida” system in order to find an answer to this question. With this system he replicates life in a digital world and applies Darwinian principles of evolution in order to watch digital artificial life form evolve.

From these artificial life forms he extracts the biosignature, which means a signature of living things in order to apply it to signals NASA is finding in the Universe. An incredible task, with an incredible theory and work at its basis. Still, I have another question. What do we do if the alien life forms are not carbon based? The theory Adams uses takes into account signals from known carbon-based life forms. Could life outside the known spectrum exist? Definitively!
