We own the Moon?

Michael Stevens aka Vsauce tells us that the 1979 Moon Treaty says that no one can own any part of outer space. This treaty has only few countries that have signed it, but most of the countries have signed the 1967 Outer Space Treaty that says that outer space is not subject to national appropriation.

That means that you can legally own a piece of the Moon if you can get there. The minor issue is that you wonțt have the protection of your country if someone comes in and steals your home.

In any case, given the fact that you can own a land you set foot on that will help private space agencies to collect and sell a lot of metals around the Globe. Sooner than later we will be a planetary system species who owns more than one planet. A nice thought.
